The Athletes’ Voice: Control The Controllables

My journey as a college athlete has been one of perseverance and determination.

From the highs of playing for a powerhouse program like Oklahoma to the challenges of injury and the transfer process, every step has shaped me into the athlete and person I am today.

But it was during these moments of adversity that my faith deepened, and I discovered the true essence of my identity. One that extends far beyond football.

Finding Faith In Adversity

Growing up in a Catholic household, my faith has always played a significant role in my life. However, it wasn’t until a knee injury during my sophomore year that I truly understood the importance of relying on something greater than myself.

The injury forced me to question my purpose and identity beyond the game of football. It was during this time that I turned to my faith and found solace in my relationship with Jesus Christ.

With the support of my roommate and the resources available at Oklahoma, I was able to navigate the mental and physical challenges of rehabilitation.

My faith became the driving force behind my recovery, reminding me that there is more to life than just football.

Managing Health and Performance

Beyond the physical toll of football injuries, I have spent my entire life navigating a complex health journey. Managing conditions like food allergies, celiac disease, asthma, reactive hypoglycemia, and eosinophilic esophagitis has required constant vigilance and discipline.

Through these challenges, I have adopted my family’s mantra, “Control the controllables.” This mindset allows me to stay focused on my goals rather than being defined by a diagnosis. By sharing this journey, I hope to inspire other athletes facing similar adversity to believe in themselves and their ability to succeed despite the obstacles.

Every day requires meticulous meal planning and preparation, which has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and preparation that translate directly to the football field. While these health realities present unique hurdles, they have ultimately sharpened my mental toughness and deepened my appreciation for the fuel I provide my body. I’ve learned that advocating for my own well-being is a critical piece of preparation, not a sign of weakness.

Navigating The Transfer Portal

After recovering from my injury, I found myself yearning for a bigger role and the opportunity to play more. This led me to enter the transfer portal, a decision that came with its own set of challenges.

The transfer process is often misunderstood, with many failing to realize the complexities and uncertainties involved. From finding a new school to dealing with the logistics of moving, it was a daunting experience.

However, with the support of my family and friends, I remained focused on my goals and kept pushing forward.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the transfer process was the dynamics of NIL in college football. The landscape has changed drastically, and it can be difficult to navigate the promises and expectations that come with it. I believe there needs to be more transparency and accountability in this area to ensure that athletes are not taken advantage of.

Through my own experiences, I have come to realize the importance of advocating for change and being proactive in seeking opportunities for growth and development.

Chasing New Dreams

Ultimately, my decision to transfer to Marshall University was driven by my desire to fulfill a lifelong dream to become a FBS full scholarship athlete. It was a risk, but one that I knew I had to take in order to avoid any regrets in the future.

As I start on my fifth season, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead.

I believe that this year will be the culmination of all the hard work and sacrifices I have made throughout my collegiate career.

To the aspiring young athletes out there, my advice is to seize every opportunity that comes your way. Whether it’s playing at a lower division or taking a chance in the transfer portal, don’t be afraid to bet on yourself and chase your dreams.

And always remember to surround yourself with a strong support system and seek guidance from those who have walked the path before you.

I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and the growth I have experienced along the way. It is my hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to overcome their own obstacles and find their true identity both on and off the field.
