The Athletes’ Voice: Unapologetically Me

By Chloe Shimkin

My journey as a college soccer player at the University of Texas began long before I set foot on campus. It started with a decision to leave my home in New York and head to IMG Academy in Florida during the pandemic.

At IMG, I had the opportunity to develop as a player and a person in ways I never imagined. The world-class facilities and the chance to play against top competition prepared me for the challenges of college soccer.

But it wasn’t just about the training. It was about embracing new opportunities and experiences that would shape my future. Little did I know that this journey would also lead me to a new way of expressing myself and embracing my identity through NIL and social media.

A Sisterly Influence

One of the most significant influences on my journey to UT was my sister, Jilly. I knew I wanted to play alongside her, and learning from her on and off the field has been invaluable.

When I arrived at UT, I quickly realized that college soccer was a different beast. The speed of play was unlike anything I had experienced before. It took time to adjust, but I was determined to make an impact.

By the end of the spring season, I felt like I was finally catching up to the upperclassmen and ready to contribute to the team.

Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good

The transition to college soccer wasn’t the only change in my life. The NIL landscape opened up new opportunities for me to showcase my personality and express who I am beyond the field.

Growing up, I was always a yapper, as my family would say. I loved being in front of the camera, and social media allowed me to share my life with others in a way that I never thought possible.

I learned that being authentic and true to myself could take me far and open doors I never imagined.

One of the unique aspects of my identity is my pre-game ritual of doing a full face of makeup. It’s a tradition that started at IMG with my teammate Sadie Paul, who now plays at TCU.

We believed in the motto: “Look good, feel good, play good.”

That mindset has followed me to UT and beyond. It’s a reminder that being a woman in sports doesn’t mean you can’t be girly or feminine.

I love this ritual because it makes me feel my best when I step onto the field.

Embracing The NIL Landscape

The NIL landscape has allowed me to work with brands that align with my personal brand and values. It’s surreal to have the opportunity to collaborate with companies that I use daily and believe in.

I’m grateful for every opportunity that comes my way through my platform. It’s about more than just endorsements; it’s about sharing my journey and inspiring others to be true to themselves.

As I enter my junior season at UT, I’m excited to continue growing as a player and embracing the opportunities that come my way. I’m grateful for the support of my teammates, coaches, and the entire UT community.

I’m also thankful for the NIL landscape that has allowed me to express my identity and make an impact beyond the field.

I’ve learned that anything is possible with hard work and authenticity, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.
