I hated soccer at first. It was no fun. I cried all the time and never wanted to go to practice.
In fact, the only reason I even started playing was because my mom worked for a soccer office, and I got free access to summer camps and other perks. It was just a way to keep me busy.
But things unexpectedly took a turn after my freshman year of high school.
I got recruited to play for an MLS academy in Nashville. It was a massive leap for me, and it took some convincing for my parents to let me move away from my hometown in Michigan. They were understandably hesitant because it meant moving eight hours away and living with a random host family.
I was just a 15-year-old kid, and it was a big step into the unknown. But deep down, I knew it was my dream to become a professional soccer player. Playing at that academy was the best way to maximize my chances of making that dream a reality, so I embarked on this incredible journey.
The Nashville Experience
My first year in Nashville was tough. I didn’t get much playing time as I was the backup goalkeeper for most of the season. I battled homesickness and constantly questioned if it was worth leaving high school and moving to a new state.
But I stuck with it, and things turned around.
In my second year, I became the starting goalkeeper and formed a tight-knit group of friends who became like family to me. I was eventually promoted to the MLS Next Pro team, which allowed me to fulfill some of my dreams, including making my professional debut.
I even got the opportunity to travel with the MLS team and participate in their preseason. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t taken that leap of faith.
And in the end, it was all worth it when I earned a scholarship to play at my dream school, Michigan State University.
Returning Home
It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m beyond grateful for the experiences I’ve had along the way. But my journey is far from over.
Playing for Michigan State holds a special place in my heart because I’ve been a Spartan fan for my entire life. Both of my parents attended MSU, so being a part of this rich tradition and legacy means the world to me. The transition from playing in a professional academy to college soccer was challenging but exciting. The level of play is different in college, as it focuses more on results and team performance.
It’s a whole new ball game, but I have embraced the change and the opportunity to grow as a player.
The Role of Social Media and NIL
Being a student-athlete in today’s world is more than just playing the sport; it’s about leveraging the power of social media and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness). I’ve embraced social media as a platform to boost my presence and connect with fans and brands. It’s not just about the money for me; it’s about sharing my journey and connecting with others who are passionate about soccer.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not to be afraid to put myself out there. At first, I was hesitant to post on social media, worrying about what others might think. But I realized that being true to myself and sharing my authentic experiences matter most.
I stopped caring about what others would say and focused on using social media to inspire and connect with others.
The Injury Setback
However, my journey hasn’t been without its challenges.
Last year, I suffered a complete tear of the labrum in my shoulder. It was tough mentally and physically, but I stayed the course and focused on my recovery.
I found solace in other hobbies, like spending time in the woods hunting, which helped me disconnect and find peace amidst the chaos.
Now, I’m back on the field, slowly but surely making my way back to full strength. It’s not an easy road, but I’m determined to prove that one injury doesn’t define me.
I want to show others that with perseverance and dedication, they can overcome any setback and achieve their dreams.
The Journey Continues
Looking back on my journey, from my reluctant beginnings in soccer to playing at a professional academy and now representing Michigan State, I’m grateful for every twist and turn.
Each experience has shaped me into the player and person I am today. I’m excited for what the future holds and the impact I can make both on and off the field.
Whether it’s through my playing career, social media, or NIL opportunities, I’m committed to using my platform to inspire others and prove that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
So, here’s to the journey and the never-ending pursuit of greatness.
