The Athletes’ Voice: Running Through Life

By Noel Barlette

March 27, 2026

As a track and field athlete at the University of Kentucky, I carry the legacy of my family’s athletic achievements with me.

My grandfather, Robert “Bob” Barlette, was one of the most accomplished athletes to come out of Western New York. A standout sprinter at Dunkirk High School, he set longstanding records in the 100-yard dash (9.6 seconds) and 220-yard dash (21.3 seconds), marks that stood for decades. He was a Section VI champion and a top finisher at the New York State meet.

In addition to his track success, he was an elite football player, rushing for over 1,100 yards in a single season and earning First Team All–Western New York and All-State honors. His achievements led to his induction into both the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame and the Section VI Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the region’s top multi-sport athletes. He went on to compete at the Division I level, playing football at both the University at Buffalo and Syracuse University.

Athletic excellence extends throughout my family, including my uncle, Richie Scanlon, who reached the professional level as an offensive lineman in the National Football League. He spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and other organizations, competing at the highest level of the sport and demonstrating the work ethic and toughness that define our family’s athletic background.

Becoming a Disciplined Athlete

When I first joined the varsity team as an eighth grader, no one knew who I was, and I didn’t take running seriously. However, after surprising everyone by almost beating our fastest senior in my first 5K race, I realized my potential and began dedicating myself to the sport.

The recruitment process was overwhelming, with people offering their opinions on where I should go. I had to learn to tune out the noise and focus on what was best for me.

Ultimately, I chose to attend the University of Kentucky because it aligned with my goals and provided the support I needed to succeed.

As a college athlete, I quickly learned that motivation alone wouldn’t carry me through the demanding training sessions. It was discipline that pushed me to show up every day and give my best effort.

Faith, Resilience, and Mental Toughness

My faith has been a constant foundation throughout my journey, shaping how I approach both success and adversity.

I faced personal challenges, including overcoming an eating disorder in high school, and through that experience, I learned that my worth extends far beyond performance. Track is what I do, but it is not who I am—my identity is rooted in Christ, not in times or results.

Those experiences strengthened my resilience and taught me to view obstacles as opportunities for growth. Today, my faith continues to guide how I compete, handle pressure, and use my platform to positively impact others.

Engaging With Social Media and NIL Opportunities

In addition to my athletic pursuits, I’ve found fulfillment in engaging with social media and NIL opportunities.

I’ve always had a creative side, and platforms like TikTok and Instagram have allowed me to express myself authentically.

It was initially challenging to put myself out there, but I knew I had something to offer, and I wanted to share my journey and experiences with others.

Through NIL deals, I’ve been able to collaborate with brands and showcase my personality and humor to a wider audience.

It’s been an incredible opportunity to connect with people and inspire them through my content.

Balancing Athletics, Academics, and Personal Life

Being a college athlete is like having a full-time job. It requires sacrifices and balancing academics, athletics, and personal life.

However, I’ve learned that it’s essential to find joy and fulfillment outside of running.

By exploring different activities, pursuing my faith, and engaging with social media, I’ve discovered who I am beyond being an athlete. It’s about creating a well-rounded life that brings me happiness and fulfillment.

Embracing Challenges and Inspiring Others

As I continue my journey as a track and field athlete, I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the opportunities I’ve had. I hope to inspire others to push through their own challenges, embrace their unique identities, and find fulfillment beyond their athletic pursuits.

Running is what I do, but it doesn’t define who I am. I’m a child of God, a resilient individual, and someone who is passionate about making a difference in the world.

Through my performances on the track and my presence on social media, I strive to glorify God and inspire others to do the same.
